The one thing to internalize: your Pokémon fires its active move automatically. You never press "attack" — you only move, dodge and switch moves.
| Where | Moving | Everything else |
|---|---|---|
| PC | WASD or arrow keys | Switch moves with 1–4, Q/E or clicking the icon · Esc pauses |
| Phone / tablet | Drag anywhere (landscape) — the joystick appears where you touch | Tap a move to switch · pause button top-right |
| Combat | Nothing — your Pokémon auto-attacks | Your job is dodging, positioning and picking the right move |
PokéSurvivor looks like a horde game and plays like a Pokémon battle wearing a horde game's coat.
Every level you pick 1 of 3 cards: a new move, an upgrade to one you own, or a stat boost for your Pokémon. This is the entire build system — Vampire Survivors DNA, Pokémon flavor.
At max level with the right upgrade card, moves transform: Ember becomes Fire Blast, Bubble becomes Surf. A fully-upgraded move is a run-defining power spike, so it's usually worth finishing what you started instead of hoarding half-leveled moves.
Wild hordes aren't dumb HP blobs — some heal their allies, some shield them, some summon reinforcements, some explode or fire telegraphed beams. The healer dies first. Always.
Rain boosts Water and weakens Fire; sun, sand, snow and fog each shuffle the math the same way. Combined with free move-switching, the type chart is your real weapon.
Rare portals open on the map. Inside: one of 18 legendary arenas — one per type — with a legendary Pokémon boss. Win for a reward; lose and you're dumped back onto the map.
A slot machine per region, fed with tickets you earn by playing (bosses and rift legendaries can drop ×10 tickets). Tickets cannot be bought with real money — it's play-to-expand, not pay-to-win.
The official guide gives you five lines. Here they are, plus the reasoning that makes them actually work.
Move in wide circles so the horde chases you in a line instead of surrounding you. A tight turn is how you die; a wide circle is how you kite 200 Pokémon into one Fire Blast.
You can hot-swap between learned moves. Super-effective damage is the biggest multiplier in the game — an average move on-type beats an upgraded move resisted.
Circles and lines filling up on the floor are incoming attacks. Step out mid-fill, not after — the telegraph ends when the animation completes, and so does your run.
A healer keeping 50 wild Pokémon alive is worth more dead than any boss. Same for shield-casters. Delete the support, then clean up.
Coins from runs buy permanent upgrades for your favorite partner. One well-invested starter outperforms a rotating cast of strangers.
Wild shinies are 1 in 4096, but the gacha can also spit them out. There's no gameplay trick beyond volume — shinies are a trophy, not a strategy.
Yes, completely. It's a non-profit fan game with no ads and no purchases — the only money involved is voluntary donations that cover server costs and grant zero gameplay advantage.
No download needed: it runs in the browser at pokesurvivor.com on PC, tablet and phone. On mobile you can also 'Add to Home Screen' to install it as an app.
Yes, in landscape. Drag your finger anywhere to move — the joystick appears where you touch — tap a move to switch to it, and use the top-right button to pause.
966 Pokémon from all 9 regions (Kanto through Paldea), all playable as your partner, each with its own moves and permanent upgrades — plus shiny forms where they exist (1 in 4096 in the wild, also in the gacha).
There's no single answer — 64 moves across 18 types, and weather plus the type chart shuffle everything. The reliable rules: finish a move to its evolution (Ember→Fire Blast, Bubble→Surf) instead of collecting half-upgraded ones, and keep 2–3 moves of different types so you can always switch to something super-effective.
Through the region gacha machines using tickets earned by playing — regular Pokémon drop tickets occasionally, while bosses and rift legendaries sometimes drop ×10 tickets. Tickets can't be bought with real money.
Yes — online co-op for up to 4 players. Add friends by nickname, invite them to your room, and play together with shared experience; you revive a fallen teammate by standing next to them.
No. It's a free, non-profit fan project unrelated to Nintendo, GAME FREAK or The Pokémon Company. Progress saves to the cloud with a free account (name/password or Google); guests can play but nothing is saved.
